How to identify

Grade The Can

To grade your can of paint, I recommend you head on over to the most passionate can collectors at Cap Matches Color. They have handled more vintage paint than anyone else and have developed a comprehensive grading system. The CMC grading system is extremely simplified below:

  • Grade A - perfect
  • 1++ - almost perfect
  • 1+ - few imperfections
  • 1
  • 1- - clean and found indoors
  • 2+ - rust beyond oxidation and one tear in the paper
  • 2 - poorest indoor condition and still has cap
  • 3 - Heavy spots, rust, scratches and more significant fade
  • 4 - May have holes, very poor condition, excessive spotting, but at least half of can is readable
